Skincare: Not Just For Ladies!
Every day we are bombarded with skincare tips for women, beauty secrets for women, ways for women to keep looking young, how women should take care of their skin…but what about men? It’s just as important for men to take good care of their entire body, including the skin, as it is for women. Adopting a good skincare regiment can raise your self-esteem, help you feel more healthy, and protect you against harmful free radicals that rush into your skin every single day.
Skin Type
Is your skin oily, dry, or a combination of both? Try using a tissue to blot your nose and forehead – if the tissue has oily residue on it, you probably have oily skin! People with oily and combination skin also tend to break out more than others. Does your skin often feel tight, chapped, or flakey? This means your skin is on the dry side. Knowing your skin type will help you find the perfect products to make skincare easy and effective.
Once you find your skin type, explore your options for products. You’ll want to find, at the very least, a cleanser and a moisturizer. Men’s skin and women’s skin are different, so try to look for something specific for you to receive as many benefits from your products as possible.
Cleansing
Men should cleanse the skin at least once a day before bed, though cleansing an additional time in the morning is even better! Pay attention to how your skin reacts to the cleanser – if your skin burns or hurts at all, you should probably switch to something more sensitive. If your skin feels dry or tight after washing your face, try something more oil based. You’ll always want to avoid cleansers that foam – these are especially good at drying out the natural oils in your skin, which leads to breakouts and overproduction of oil. Cleansing the face will help draw free radicals and harmful toxins out of the skin, helping to promote the production of collagen and keeping your skin looking young and healthy.
Moisturizing
After cleansing, it is very important to moisturize to replenish any natural oils that were lost, and to keep your skin hydrated. Moisturizing helps keep the skin soft and supple, as well as maintaining a healthy balance of natural oils in the skin. Find a moisturizer that feels right for you – some people prefer a lighter cream that doesn’t make the skin feel greasy, and some prefer a heavier cream that they can really massage into the skin. Whatever you choose, remember to always apply it after cleansing or exfoliating!
Sunscreen
No one is immune to sun damage, regardless of age, gender, height, weight, skin tone – no one! It is so important to protect your skin from harmful UV rays throughout the entire year to prevent premature aging and different types of skin cancer. You can do this by putting sunscreen on every day first thing in the morning. Men have an advantage here, because if you have a beard, you’ll have less surface area to protect, so you’ll be done lathering up in no time!
