Healing a Broken Heart
While many lovers are excitedly celebrating love as Valentine's Day approaches, it is important to recognize that this time of year can be extremely difficult for those who are suffering from loneliness or heartbreak. A broken heart can make any person feel extremely helpless, lost, and depressed, but with help from friends, family, and a lot of self-love, it is very possible to not only move on, but to use it is an opportunity to grow and to become a better person! We’ve put together a list of 5 essential oils to help ease the pain, to help heal the heart, and to prepare you for a fresh start.
Release Your Emotions
Rosewood: During heartbreak, it is incredibly important to release grief and sadness, to let yourself feel your feelings and work through them. Rosewood is the perfect essential for the job; it is used by many aromatherapists to help treat depression. The oil stimulates feelings and the secretion of hormones, clears the mind, and steadies the nerves during times of high stress or crisis. It stimulates the mind and gives a feeling of level-headedness while helping the body to relax.
To use: Mix 4-6 drops of rosewood essential with your favorite base (we recommend jojoba oil or coconut oil) and massage into your chest and temples. Close your eyes, take some deep breaths, relax, and let yourself feel your feelings as deeply as you can.
Boost Your Immunity
Tea Tree: When our spirits are low, it’s common for our immune system to follow suit. It is important to remember to eat and sleep enough, which can be hard to do when we are sad, but self-care combined with treating yourself to some nice essential oils can work wonders on your health. Tea tree is a lovely oil that has anti-microbial and anti-viral properties – and it smells wonderful! If you do find yourself coming down with something, tea tree can still be used as it is a natural decongestant and expectorant, so it will help your body get rid of phlegm.
To use: Run yourself a hot bath and add 8-10 drops directly to the water. Let yourself breathe deep and enjoy the warm water – alone time can be the best time of your day!
Eases feelings
Eucalyptus: When dealing with a big sense of loss, it is very common to go through a huge range of emotions. Eucalyptus essential oil is expansive and refreshing, and can help you release and work through these big feelings. The use of this oil opens up the mind to clearer thinking and presents an air of positivity and optimism.
To use: Try using a diffuser for this essential oil. Put it in any room that may feel closed in or that needs some brightening and enjoy the effects!
Release stress & calm nerves
Lavender: Heartbreak very commonly causes feelings of stress and nervousness. Lavender essential oil is very commonly used as a stress reliever – even for those who suffer from severe PTSD. It is excellent for improving mental concentration and calming agitation. Lavender is considered a nervous system restorative and will help bring you inner peace.
To use: Rub 2-3 drops on your palms and inhale; the scent will provide an almost immediate calm feeling. Try placing an essential oil diffuser by your bed to help you relax at night.
Self love
Bergamot: self-love is the most important thing to focus on during times of heartbreak, and bergamot is the embodiment of self-love. It opens you up to love and self-acceptance, and helps process and release insecurities and emotional pain. Bergamot can help you find joy in learning about your uniqueness, which will eventually result in great levels of self-confidence!
To use: Many use bergamot as a natural perfume after bathing. Mix 6-8 drops in 1-2 teaspoons of your favorite base and apply before you start your day for boosted confidence and happiness.
Take care of yourself, practice self-love and show yourself compassion. You are loved!
