5 Warming Essential Oils

Now that we are well into winter, frigid mornings can be more and more difficult to handle; going to work, leaving your home, or even getting out of bed can seem like daunting tasks! While there is nothing we can do about the weather besides stick it out, the use of essential oils can help keep our bodies warm and our minds clear amid freezing temperatures.

Here are our 5 favorite warming essential oils:

Cardamom

Cardamom is a lovely essential oil that boosts your metabolism and helps to relieve depression and fatigue by stimulating your digestive system and stimulating the production of enzymes and hormones in your body. Because of the stimulating effects that Cardamom has, it helps heat the body by improving circulation and promoting sweating. Cardamom is also used to clear congestion and relieve colds and headaches, so it’s an important one to have on hand during cold and flu season.

Juniper Berry

Juniper Berry essential oil is commonly used to detoxify the body because of its depurative properties. It is an antiseptic, antibacterial, AND an anti-inflammatory, which means that it will help prevent infections and speed up the healing process. Juniper Berry is commonly used to treat arthritis – something that tends to have more of an effect on people during the cold months. Aromatherapy with Juniper Berry is effective in providing stress and anxiety relief, we recommend taking some “me” time to relax and feel it’s effects!

Clove Bud

Clove Bud essential oil is an extremely powerful antioxidant, so it is very useful when you’re feeling under the weather. Like all of the oils on this list, it promotes circulation which helps get your blood pumping and your body feeling warm! Clove bud also supports a strong immune system, which is important for staying healthy during cold and flu season.

Marjarom

Marjarom is an *essential* essential oil to have on hand during winter because it provides relief from fevers and headaches and infections caused by viruses such as the common cold, flu, mumps, and even chicken pox! Marjarom can also be used as an expectorant to expel phlegm and to help with asthma and coughs. The best part about using Marjarom in the winter is that it warms your body by improving your circulation and promoting sweating.

Ginger

Ginger is a flowering plant whose root is very commonly used in cooking because of its ability to aid digestion and treat upset stomachs. Ginger essential oil is a powerful antiseptic – it heals infections caused by microorganisms and infections including food poisoning! This essential oil is also commonly used as a natural remedy for the common cold and flu because of its high levels of antioxidants, and because it is an expectorant it is very effective when used to treat respiratory problems like asthma and bronchitis. Ginger essential oil reduces inflammation and also increases circulation which, in turn, helps make your body feel warm.

Essential oils can be used in a variety of different ways. You can apply diluted oils directly on your skin (never put them on before they are diluted – they are too harsh without a carrier oil), purchase an essential oil diffuser, treat yourself to an aromatherapy massage, cleanse and moisturize with natural skincare products that contain essential oils (Gifts From The Earth customers have the option to custom scent their skincare products!), or simply inhale the oils.

Remember, although essential oils are very useful in naturally treating many ailments, they are very heavily concentrated plant extracts and can be harmful when not used correctly. Take caution when using them around your pets – some essential oils can be toxic to furry friends so it’s always a good idea to double check which oils are safe for your little buddies before using them in your home.

Stay warm and enjoy!
